London Pride at London City - The Video

London City celebrated the real life event LGBT Pride throughout the weekend with a multitude of events in the venues and Glastonbury in JUICED, complete with rain, tents and mud!

With over 50 hours of live DJ's, cabaret acts and the opening of the new LGBT Muscle Club, EDGE, some of the team are understandably having a slightly low-key day today. We do hope you enjoyed Pride as much as we did and that your head was only throbbing from the music and not the booze.

Here's the video, Enjoy!

EDGE Dancebar

London City (London inSL, Second Life London) announces the opening of EDGE Dancebar.

The first and only gay London venue opens it's doors to rave reviews. Catering to the LGBT and Straight Community alike, EDGE features Go-Go Bois and live DJ's.

EDGE offers an industrial feel in a spacious environment. But don't let the size put you off, there are a few cosy spots if you're up for a snog.

Ready for a break from all the dancing? Venture upstairs and relax on the sofa with a cocktail or step out on the balcony for a breath of fresh air and spectacular views of the city.

Special events are held each night of the week to a variety of Dance, House and Club music. Drop by Second Life London's newest attraction, you may have to push your way past a few hot sweaty half naked bodies but it's well worth the effort.

Happy Birthday to Second Life

Second Life turns 11 years old and today sees the start of the SL11B celebrations.

London City is the only London permitted to exhibit at the Official celebrations.  You can visit our plot from 12pm SL (8pm UK) today here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SL11B%20Spellbound/140/58/22

The theme this year is Empires of the Future and we thought should celebrate all things British with the most iconic leader of modern times, Sir Winston Churchill.

Here is a video which hopefully captures the spirit of our show piece.

See you this evening - our team will be on hand from 12.30pm SL at SL11B.

London City - Officially SL11B

THE EMPIRES OF THE FUTURE...

The opening of Second Life's largest community event is just one day away. It seems like only yesterday we were at the closing events of SL10B and now here we are a year later about to celebrate the opening of SL11B, Second Life's Eleventh Birthday.

This years event features the best and brightest that Second Life has to offer, and we are pleased that London City has been counted among them. The only London in Second Life asked to participate at the Official SL11B event, the London City Exhibit is based on a bright and prosperous future.

Of course, being the only London chosen to exhibit did present some pressures but we happily rose to the challenge. It was great to be able to build in confidence knowing that those who abused their Second Life Birthday parcel last year to grief us were excluded from participation this year.

The build began with a concept and quickly took on a life of it's own. Growing and changing to become what we feel exemplifies this years theme, "The Empires Of The Future Are The Empires Of The Mind".

As part of the SL11Big Hunt, we have not one but TWO free gifts for you. These items were created by London Brand exclusively for London City's Exhibit. But you'll have to wait until tomorrow when the regions officially open before you can get your hands on these one of a kind items.

Everyone here at London City would like to thank the Community, Visitors and Merchants for making London City the most popular destination in Second Life.

Brave new world or foolhardy press release?

A couple of day ago Latif Khalifa (developer for Radegast, Singularity, Opensim and many more) and a man who is definitely a man in the know, posted to SL Universe:

"Linden Lab is working on a next generation virtual world. Most of Lab's development resources are already working on it. Smaller dev team headed by Oz Linden remains working on SL.
The new worlds will be closed sourced, and not backward compatible with content from SL"

His statement captures the essentials of it, but 2 days later Linden Lab has issued the statement:

"The next generation virtual world will go far beyond what is possible with Second Life, and we don't want to constrain our development by setting backward compatibility with Second Life as an absolute requirement from the start. That doesn’t mean you necessarily won’t be able to bring parts of your Second Life over, just that our priority in building the next generation platform is to create an incredible experience and enable stunningly high-quality creativity, rather than ensuring that everything could work seamlessly with everything created over Second Life’s 11 year history."

Well this is great news if the platform is to be released immediately and we can all start packing up our boxes ready to move.  If however we are a year or more away from it, haven't they just effectively killed SL, the very platform that they say will be around for many years to come?

Do they expect designers, scripters and builders to continue to develop their content at the same rate as before, knowing of an imminent move, where it is likely that the content will not be easy to port across to the new platform, if at all?   Do they expect the residents of Second Life to continue to invest in purchases of clothing, animations and scenery from the Market Place, being aware that it will only be of use on the SL platform that is going to suffer an unprecedented mass exodus of users?

I often have a really hard time understanding how such a large company fires so wide of the mark of basic standards of marketing.  Any where else on the planet, development of a product with such resounding repercussions would be totally behind closed doors, with a big announcement when it was ready to be released - and not before, for fear of frightening current investors.

To say that something so massive is going to happen at some point, without the new offer even being available to see is utterly astonishing because it so undermines the existing offer, to the point where anyone thinking of any significant investment in SL is bound to think twice.

Are you going to buy a sim for $300 a month and start something new in Second Life that will definitely shrink and not grow, or are you going to hold out and see if they have fixed the pricing structure at long last in the new world and offer regions for a fraction of the cost?

The speculation about the announcement is that Linden Lab wanted to announce it to tie in with SL11B.  Couldn't they have waited until SL12B and say 'here it is', rather than leave everyone in the lurch, guessing about the future and the monies they have already invested?

A foolhardy and quite astonishing press release if you ask me. Go back to Business School.

UB40 - Relay for Life Event

London City is hosting its first ever Relay for Life Event this coming Saturday 21st June raising funds for the charity to help fight cancer.

With a brand new show, UB40 Tribute in Concert, we hope that our visitors, instead of tipping the DJ's and the band, will give their tips of appreciation to the Relay for Life donation tip jars.

Selling over 70 million records, the band is best known for songs, Red Red Wine, Kingston Town, Falling in Love With You, Breakfast in Bed, Homely Girl, Don't Break My Heart and many more.

London City and SL11B

London City is pleased to announce that once again we have been invited to exhibit at Second Life's biggest Community event, SL11B.

This years theme, Empires Of The Future, has been taken from a quote by Winston Churchill. What better way to personify this than London City, especially during the Centennial of The Great War.

The London City Exhibit, titled The Future Of London In Second Life, is being built to exemplify Winston Churchill's fighting spirit, working towards a future Second Life free from greifing and hatred. A place where all communities co-exist in peace and prosperity.

We were pleased to discover that London City has been chosen as the only London to exhibit at SL11B. With this in mind we have been working to create a distinctive and provocative exhibit.

Watch this space for further developments of the exhibit.

Whilst we build, pop over to London City and join the largest community in Second Life.
