SL Go, Goes

SL Go has announced it's Shutdown.

SL Go offers the ability to run Second Life at an optimum speed on older computers, because it does all the hard work of rendering and processing for you and streams the result to the computer or Android device.

Considering just how popular this service is and that only last month SL Go added the option to pay for the service with Linden Dollar, this is will be quite a loss to the Second Life community.

It will come as a bolt out of the blue for SL Go users as the company had only very recently opened their own Second Life Island SL Go Island and announced only two weeks ago it was making Firestorm viewer its primary service for Android users.

This style of processing, the first of its kind is revolutionary, so it was a prime candidate that the technology would be acquired. Onlive, the people behind SL Go has sold its patents to Sony, who will not continue with the Second Life streaming service.

The announcement on the SL Go Website reads:

It is with great sadness that we must bring the SL Go service to a close. Sony is acquiring important parts of OnLive, and their plans don't include a continuation of SL Go. Your service should continue uninterrupted until April 30, 2015. No further subscription fees will be charged, and you can continue to use the service until that date.

After April 30, 2015, our data centers will shut down and the service will be offline. All accounts will be closed, and all credit card data will be deleted. No refunds will be available for any subscriptions.

We will have extremely limited coverage for customer service over the next 30 days. We hope the FAQs below will answer all of your questions. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being an SL Go customer, and we wish you all the best.

In our year of SL Go service, we have become quite close to the Second Life® community. Thanks to your patronage and constructive feedback, SL Go became one of OnLive’s most successful services. We know how important SL Go is for many of you, and it saddens us to bring the service to a close. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to you for being a part of “SL Go by OnLive” and wish you all the best.
