Landslide for Tories

A victory for democracy as Tories take 364 seats compared to Labours 203, sending a clear mandate to Boris Johnson to "Get Brexit Done".

The results of the election saw the Conservative Party in a landslide victory as Jeremy Corbyn stepped down as Labour leader while Jo Swinson also stepped down as leader of the Liberal Democrats.

UK General Election

Here we go again!  Our fixed term parliament act means that we should only go to the polls every five years, and yet, this will be our third General election since 2015.  Coupled with voting in the European elections, the referendum, and the usual local elections, some of us are beginning to run a groove in the road between our homes and the polling station.

It looks like it will come down to an A or B vote at this General Election, on Thursday in the UK.

The Liberal Democrats who got off to a flying start, somewhat shot themselves in the foot by saying a vote for them would mean a vote for remaining in the EU, without so much as a second referendum.  Although it sounded good at first, people started to feel that it was more than slightly undemocratic to cancel Brexit without asking the people first, and their support soon waned.

The Brexit Party decided they would form an alliance with the Conservatives, without ever establishing if it was reciprocal and their support took a tumble.

So, we are left with the two main parties.   The Conservatives with a strong message of "Get Brexit Done", which is their commitment, should they achieve a majority government, or Labour, who say they will negotiate a new trade deal with the EU, and then vote against their own deal, in a sort of half-in, half-out agreement, with free broadband thrown in everyone in the UK.  Sadly, Government owned (and monitored?) internet doesn't seem to appeal much to the voters.

Whoever you decide to vote for,  good luck with your choice.  Polls open  onThursday at 7am and remain open until 10pm.

You can discuss the General Election at our Election Special Voice event in the main hub in London City from 2pm SL time (10pm UK) on Thursday.

Glen Campbell's Country Christmas, 14th December.
Demis Roussos on Ice, 21 December.
The Andy Williams Christmas Show, Christmas Eve
Pan's People, 28th December

Cheesecake Survey

We ran another scientific user poll this week, to find out if Cheesecake is better baked, or unbaked. 72 people voted, with 31 voting for baked and 41 voting for unbaked.

It was a close call, but in the end 57% of voters decided for the creamy moist unbaked variety instead of the crusty old dry version.

Thanks for taking part,  another earth shattering poll soon!

The return of last names

The lab blogged yesterday about changes coming to the grid in January.  These include changes to event hosting, a new level of premium membership, marketplace fees.. and the return of last names!

Premium users will, for an additional fee, be able to change their first and last names!

You can of course choose any first name, but the last name will be from a list curated by the lab.   This is how it originally worked all those years ago.

Old last names from way back will not be available, but a user can select from an exhaustive list of new last names.

Additionally the lab is asking for name suggestions, so if you have one in mind you would really like to see, now would be a good time to suggest it!

You can see the full  official blog post here.

No Halloween Brexit Party

We have an event posted for a Brexit Party on Halloween evening.

Needless to say, we were naively optimistic at the time of posting, and the UK isn't going anywhere this year.

In the meantime the UK is set to have yet another General Election on 12th December.  If you need to know which way to your polling station, just follow the groove made in the road by the public on their umpteen trips to the polls in the last couple of years.

Our Halloween party will be held at Madame Lala's on 31st October at 2pm SL time (9pm UK) with DJ DeSantis.

Darrius Gothly

It is very sad to have to let you know that Darrius Gothly, the programming talent behind "Rental Beam" and DGP4SL has died quite suddenly and unexpectedly.

Darrius  had battled ill health for several years, but was mostly present in Second Life, continuing to work on his products.  Moreover, he was an extremely decent man, friendly and very helpful.  He always went the extra mile for his clients and friends.

For those estates using The Rental Beam service add-on for CasperLet, his management team hopes to keep the service running.   They ask that for now, customers do not use the ticketing system and reach out directly to Mysti Nowles who is overseeing the project and its transition.

Darrius was a friendly jolly chap, and an amazingly gifted programmer.  He will be missed.

Singularity Viewer Bakes on Mesh

Singularity Viewer is now bang up to date with all the latest offerings!
As of yesterday Bakes on Mesh is now included.  (Roughly speaking.. BoM is essentially an updated version of layer style clothing, which allows it to be worn on mesh bodies).

To download the latest build head to Singularity and Alchemy site and then click on the link at the bottom where it says Singularity Installer for Windows.

For those of you who have been using the test versions of Singularity, they have come to an end as the new nightly builds take over, to keep the viewer up to date.   This allows you to dip in at any time and grab the latest version and apply it.

If you are jumping across from the "test" builds and wish to preserve your settings,  you will need to copy the settings file across.  Here's how to do it.

To Open Command Prompt:  WindowsKey + R, then type CMD and press enter.

Now copy and paste these commands one line at a time..

cd  %appdata%\secondlife\user_settings     (Press Enter)

copy settings_singularitytest.xml settings_singularityalpha.xml  (Press Enter)

All done, you have copied your settings for the new Singularity.
One you are happy with the new installation, you can uninstall the old Singularity Test viewer.

London City is the official home of the Singularity store.  If you would like to support the project or get more information and tips and tricks, visit the store here:  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/London%20City/189/196/24

For user to user help, you can join the inworld group:  on the top of the viewer click Help, then Singularity group.

What better time is there to make plans for an early weekend, seeing as you won't be able to go to work tomorrow?

Whilst sheltering from this hurricane of the century, why not pop along to Madame Lala's from 1pm SL time (9pm UK) to enjoy Oktoberfest.  Oodles of grog and yodelling are bound to take your mind of the carnage going on outside.

Firestorm releases BoM update

Firestorm viewer has today launched their Bakes on Mesh update.

There is a lot of information available on it if you care to wade through the BoM discussion on the Second Life Forums but in a nutshell:    Bakes on Mesh is a new feature to allow system avatar baked textures to be shown on mesh attachments.

Here I am with my gorgeous male model, Mr Billy Arentire, who is setting up his body to accommodate this new feature.   It's early in our morning and my model is still a bit grumpy and swearing at it a lot.   This is a good sign however, it shows his determination in getting it right!

Have fun, and if you see Mr Arentire wandering around looking confused, dressed in a blue top and yellow trousers, don't laugh at him.  Well, not to his face anyway.

You can download and upgrade your Firestorm viewer for the new Bakes on Mesh, here: https://www.firestormviewer.org/downloads/
