Home For Christmas in London City

If you rent a land parcel and pay 4 weeks before 1st December, to avoid any unnecessary concerns that your rent will expire during the holiday season, we will extend your rental to 7th January.

With just one payment of 4 weeks, you are Home for Christmas with London City.

If you regularly visit London City and enjoy the community atmosphere, you may like the convenience of being able to build or rez your own home within a stones-throw of the centre of all the action in Second Life.

London City offers land plots where you can build or rez your own buildings and set home.  If you are not a builder, there are literally thousands of suitable houses available to purchase and rez.

You might be concerned about uninvited guests, but this is no problem at all because all parcels are highly configurable and offer total privacy and security. If you decide to set your land to 'private', only you and your guests can enter your parcel.  If you configure 'see and chat' no one else can see you inside your parcel.  If you set voice to the parcel channel, no one outside your parcel can hear you!

Of course you might be a party person and like strangers dropping by.  You can set your parcel to public access and the world and his wife can visit.    If someone annoys you, add them to your ban list!  Everything is configurable.

Each parcel comes with an impressive level of configuration to control your media, access and privacy.

The 'About Land' setting allows each tenant to configure:
Media/Music stream  settings
Deed Objects such as tv and radio changers
Eject and Freeze Residents
Eject from Group
Control Allowed and Banned Residents list
Set Home to Here
Return deeded objects
Set privacy (see & chat with others)
Set land to public or private access.

It was great to give the new AWS style region a rigorous test last night, with 100 avatars on the region.

We're also aware that the cap of 110 avatars being able to visit was capped at 100 and we've passed news of this issue to the lab to take a look at.

Happy Bonfire Night!

Thanks for making this years display such a delight.  Great fun.  A lockdown special! :)

Gunpowder, Treason and Plot

Guy Fawkes - Loved to Party
Today is the 5th of November, the anniversary of  old rogue Guido Fawkes' (now rebranded as Guy Fawkes) attempt to blow up the King on England!

Let's have a potted history...

5th November, also known as Bonfire Night

Back in 1605, Guido Fawkes and his croanies wanted to protest on how Catholics were treated.

So they decided that they would try to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in particular the House of Lords, by smuggling in hundreds of gunpowder kegs into the cellar for a firework display of their own and try detonating them on 5th November as the King (James I) was opening Parliament.

Unfortunately for Guy Fawkes, one of his gang was a lag and would blab when he got smashed and word soon spread all over town about this amazing party they were planning. They were caught in the act without so much as a roman candle going off.
Penny for the Guy?

In those days execution was considered as a fitting punishment for minor crimes like stealing a loaf of bread.  So they decided on a more fitting punishment and decided to chop Guy Fawkes into bits, hang him for a couple of minutes, disembowel him and do other unmentionable things to embarrass him whilst he was still alive.

Since petty crime only resulted in the severing of limbs and sometimes being boiled in oil, this gruesome torture of being 'hung drawn and quartered' was reserved exclusively for traitors.

Whilst Guy Fawkes was a bit of a shit, he is also widely regarded as a person who knew how to Party.

This is still observed on 5th November every year, when people of Great Britain, literally burn money they don't have and cheer as they see it go up in flames and whoosh into the air and erupt as fireworks.. whilst those who are more sensible collect old logs, burn and effigy called a Guy and create a massive bonfire to roast their chestnuts.

Join us for a firework show today 12pm SL time (8pm UK)

Got it wrong

With some relief, I called the election for Trump and got it wrong!

Hopefully the new President will eventually end the unremitting hostilities that so many of our friends have endured.

Remember remember the fifth of November.  Hope you can join us for a firework show at 12pm SL time.

Great Britain in Lockdown

We saw this coming a mile off, didn't we?

The United Kingdom begins a full National Lockdown again at a minute after midnight on Thursday 5th November.

Here in London City we are determined to make the best of it and keep spirits high with some great entertainment, concerts, parties and events.  There is nothing we can do but wait it out again. Maybe instead of thinking we are stuck at home, we should consider that we are safe at home?

Chin-up everyone.  We've been through this before and emerged. We might as well treat it as a "virtual holiday"

Join us on 5th November from 12pm SL time (8pm UK) because it is Guy Fawkes night and we will be having a wonderful virtual firework display.  Since you have the next day off work, maybe a little tipple to warm the cockles of your heart?

USA General Election

Uh oh!

So here it is, the most jaw-dropping election ever in American History as two dinosaurs fight to the death.

The 'Great Orange' against 'Tom Cruise's father in Top Gun, back from heaven'.

Who will win, Donald Trump or Joe Biden, and why do you want your candidate to win?

There will be heated debate, but this is your chance to air your feelings whilst we all await the results together.  Fierce debate is fine, but common decency is expected.

Join us from 2am SL time (10pm UK)  Good luck and may your candidate win!

I hope you get to tell me how wrong I am for the next four years, but (and my feelings have nothing to do with it),  I am absolutely certain that Trump will win.

Halloween - War of The Worlds Stage Show - Saturday

War of The Worlds comes to London City on Saturday!

On  30th October 1938 long before television, CBS broadcast a radio version of The War of The Worlds.

They mentioned several times at the start of the show that it was a dramatization.

The format of the show was that of a light music program, constantly interrupted by reporters giving an account of the aliens progressive invasion.

What the network had overlooked was that the average radio listener to jump stations throughout the evening.

As the play continued, more and more people tuned in to the War of The Worlds broadcast without realising it was a play. Furthermore the radio broadcast had used real town names instead of fictitious ones, and one by one each town fell into the hands of the Martians.

Panic ensued as whole towns, swept in waves of hysteria, packed their possessions and fled to surrounding areas.

A suicide was reported as one woman said she would rather die than be taken by the Martians. In another town there was a fatal stampede as residents desperate to leave trampled each other.

The following morning CBS were forced to hold a press conference to explain themselves and to apologize for the duress they had subjected their listeners to.

Ultimately with such intense press coverage, this catapulted the actor who has played the lead reporter, a young and unknown Orson Welles, into super-stardom.  Just three short years later, he wrote, produced, directed and starred in Citizen Kane.

Join us in London City on Saturday for the interactive stage show version of this most famous of classics.

Our evening begins with a huge mass of luminous gas erupting from Mars and heading towards Earth.

Across two-hundred-million miles of void, invisibly hurtling towards us, is the first of the missiles that will bring so much calamity.

Be part of this show.  Come dressed however you like, but to be in the cast and to dance on the stage, please wear turn of the century or steampunk clothing.  Men in cloth caps and working clothes, ladies in bustles or bonnets, or as maids.   Circa anytime between 1880 to 1940.

The event starts at 1pm SL Time (8pm UK)

Hazel O'Connor on Saturday

A special treat as we move towards Halloween..

London City's tribute to Breaking Glass, with Hazel O'Connor, from the 1980's Punk/New Wave scene.

The hit film starring Hazel O'Connor and Phil Daniels, and broke the UK box office in 1981.

The film was called Breaking Glass and charted the success of a post-Punk/New Wave singer 'Kate' from humble beginnings, singing in rowdy back street bars, to sudden super stardom and her eventual meltdown.

Hazel O'Connor wrote and performed all of songs from the movie and just like her character in the film, experienced a brief superstardom in the early 80s with songs, Black Man, Eighth Day, If Only, Writing on the Wall, D-Days, Who Needs It and her most famous of all, Will You, which remained in the charts for 14 weeks.

Come and enjoy the show on Saturday http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/London%20City/128/113/23

The Party starts at 12pm SLT (8pm UK), with the concert at 1pm SLT

London City Uplifted

This will not come as a surprise to the astute regulars at London City. We were moved into the cloud two weeks ago.

We kept it quiet because we wanted to know about any issues out of the ordinary that we should report back to the Lab.  As we are sure you are aware, making this known early on, could have resulted in a lot of erroneous errors being reported, which are nothing to do with the cloud system.

What we know so far about our life in the cloud is that the region's performance and general health is exceptional and out performs the non-cloud regions.

We are actively feeding-back to the developers and they are working tirelessly behind the scenes to get the whole system perfect, with a challenging end of year target.

A couple of problem things you may have noticed during our testing is, profiles being slow to load, teleport in/out issues, and sometimes failing to attach a Hud or clothing when changing outfits in London City.

To workaround these issues, if teleport fails, walk into one of our connecting regions and try again, and the same with changing clothes.  It has never been a great idea to change outfits in a very busy region, so walking across to one of our others, is best practice anyway.

These issues are being worked on, and it is why we wanted to help with the testing phase.

We hope this answers your questions.

This story has been published with the agreement of Linden Lab.
