Grid Issues

The Second Life Grid has been up and down many times over the past 24 hours.   April Linden takes up the story..

Hi everyone.

As I’m sure most of y’all have noticed, Second Life has had a rough 24 hours. We’re experiencing outages unlike any in recent history, and I wanted to take a moment and explain what’s going on.

The grid is currently undergoing a large DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. Second Life being hit with a DDoS attack is pretty routine. It happens quite a bit, and we’re good at handling it without a large number of Residents noticing. However, the current DDoS attacks are at a level that we rarely see, and are impacting the entire grid at once.

My team (the Second Life Operations Team) is working as hard as we can to mitigate these attacks. We’ve had people working round-the-clock since they started, and will continue to do so until they settle down. (I had a very late night, myself!)

Second Life is not the only Internet service that’s been targeted today. My sister and brother opsen at other companies across the country are fighting the same battle we are. It’s been a rough few days on much of the Internet.

We’re really sorry that access to Second Life has been so sporadic over the last day. Trying to combat these attacks has the full attention of my team, and we’re working as hard as we can on it. We’ll keep posting on the Second Life Status Blog as we have new updates.

See you inworld!

April Linden

Ride on the Peace Train

It was the climax of the love-in at London City.

Through February, lovers enjoyed Matt Monro, Neil Sedaka and the Everly's in concert.  Bringing the event to a close, last night, Cat Stevens filled the amphitheater with pure love!   There wasn't a dry eye in the house.  We all had tears rolling down our legs..

Today it is Substation with Bailey and Coffee at 11am PST, then the Cash For Questions quiz with Katty on the beach at 1pm PST.

And The Music Played

It was a lovely romantic night, courtesy of the silky smooth voice of Matt Monro.  The natives were doing their mating dances and letting love flow into their hearts..

And there is more to come today with Substation at 11am PST (7pm UK) and Worlds End (on the beach) at 1pm PST

To boldly send a jolopy into space

In November 2017, you will recall the maiden flight of Flat Grid 1.  An effort to conclusively prove once and for all that the Second Life world is flat and not round.

The initial flight of our dung powered rocket was fraught with problems and our heroic astronauts were forced to return to earth in the lunar module (sofa).

Today in a gigantic leap for mankind, Flat Grid 1 launched a sculpty VW Beetle into low earth orbit.

The launch of this old banger into space, conclusively proves we can now travel to any planet in the galaxy.

Earning Money in London City

London City offers many ways to earn cash for the good things in life.

We recognize that many new residents born into the London City Gateway, need a way to get some money quickly, and that finding a job within minutes of being 'born', is likely to prove tricky.

So whilst acclimatizing to Second Life, London City offers many way to have fun and earn at the same time.

For information click the tab at the top of this page that says Earn Money.

There is also a brand new exciting way to earn cash in London City, but it's currently under wraps until we roll it out next week.  Be sure to look at the Earn Money tab during the middle on next week for more news!

Lab releases native 64-bit viewer

Linden Lab has today released their first viewer to be built as a 64-bit application for Windows and Mac.

The use of 64-bit architecture gives much more memory available to application than ever before and offers a more stable experience with significantly fewer crashes.

The viewer will automatically patch its updates via an additional executable SL_Launcher.exe  ensuring you have the latest version, without the need for fresh installations.  It also downloads the specific best version for your operating system and graphics.  For example, if you are still running a 32-bit OS then the correct version of the viewer will automatically install for you.
