Bright Canopy an alternative to SL Go
With only 250 signatures on the petition to save SL Go, one could be forgiven for thinking that perhaps the market for a Second Life streaming service is far too niche to be of interest to developers.
Bright Canopy think otherwise and held their first meeting with Second Life residents on 25th April to explained that this service should be similar to SL Go, but will be web browser based, initially using Chrome. So, if a device or PC can run Chrome then in theory it should be able to use this service as an alternative to SL Go, which ends tomorrow.
Bright Canopy is in closed beta right now, but will be a premium service accepting payment via credit card or Bitcoin, with plans to add Paypal and Linden Dollars after launch.
The service still seems to be a way off from launching, but appears to be the most likely successor to SL Go.
For information about Bright Canopy, see the notes from the in-world meeting here

General Election Polling Station
The UK goes to the polls on 8th May to elect the Government for the next five years.
Last time in 2010, no party polled sufficient enough votes to become an outright winner, resulting in a coalition being formed between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.
Here in London City, our voting system is a little simpler. Click the party you want to vote for and whoever polls the most, wins our election.
It is just for fun and no data is recorded. Cast your vote here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/London%20City/82/242/24
Last time London City went to the polls was for the mayoral elections in 2012 and your polling closely matched the vote of RL Londoners. See the Story Here

Summer in The City
Here in Old Blighty we're enjoying the first of the summer sun, with temperatures soaring to 76F today in London.
Usually the Weather in April is like this for about a week to ten days and then goes back to being a little less balmy until the Summer starts proper.
So, whilst this may indeed be a 'False Summer', make the most of it and get down to the new pool side in London City North and enjoy the swim balls and floats. There is even a bar for those of you who need a beer whilst relaxing!

Loading Inventory
With the latest server rolls this week, the old fashioned UDP way of loading your inventory is no longer supported, so the only option is using HTTP to fetch your inventory. It has always been a much quicker way to load your inventory library, so the chances are you have been using it for years already.
Should you accidently turn off the HTTP loading of inventory, as of today, your inventory will not longer load and you will be a cloud.
So best not to mess with this switch, or better still upgrade your viewer as soon as the latest update becomes available.
For those people who use Singularity, the update became available today and this removes the UDP method of inventory fetching, so you cannot bugger up your inventory by accident.
You can download the latest version here: http://alpha.singularityviewer.org/alpha/

SL Go, Goes
SL Go has announced it's Shutdown.
SL Go offers the ability to run Second Life at an optimum speed on older computers, because it does all the hard work of rendering and processing for you and streams the result to the computer or Android device.
Considering just how popular this service is and that only last month SL Go added the option to pay for the service with Linden Dollar, this is will be quite a loss to the Second Life community.
It will come as a bolt out of the blue for SL Go users as the company had only very recently opened their own Second Life Island SL Go Island and announced only two weeks ago it was making Firestorm viewer its primary service for Android users.
This style of processing, the first of its kind is revolutionary, so it was a prime candidate that the technology would be acquired. Onlive, the people behind SL Go has sold its patents to Sony, who will not continue with the Second Life streaming service.
The announcement on the SL Go Website reads:
It is with great sadness that we must bring the SL Go service to a close. Sony is acquiring important parts of OnLive, and their plans don't include a continuation of SL Go. Your service should continue uninterrupted until April 30, 2015. No further subscription fees will be charged, and you can continue to use the service until that date.
After April 30, 2015, our data centers will shut down and the service will be offline. All accounts will be closed, and all credit card data will be deleted. No refunds will be available for any subscriptions.
We will have extremely limited coverage for customer service over the next 30 days. We hope the FAQs below will answer all of your questions. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being an SL Go customer, and we wish you all the best.
In our year of SL Go service, we have become quite close to the Second Life® community. Thanks to your patronage and constructive feedback, SL Go became one of OnLive’s most successful services. We know how important SL Go is for many of you, and it saddens us to bring the service to a close. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to you for being a part of “SL Go by OnLive” and wish you all the best. Link to website: http://support.onlive.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/238/
