London City Community Gateway goes Live

London City is pleased to announce that the New User Community Gateway is now on-line, with over 600 new residents born directly into London City since Friday evening.

New accounts will experience an orientation tutorial which demonstrates the essentials needed for the first hour in Second Life, then pass through into the original community region, London City.

London City has always offered help for New Residents including an extensive Freebie Shop, one-to-one training sessions and building lessons.  Taking this to another level with a dedicated Community Gateway in which they are able to hold classes and show more in-depth orientations, adds a very useful additional layer to the initial experience.

Help is on hand as always, with the London Support team, and you may well see a Linden presence throughout the weekend as they work to ensure that New Residents born to London City get the best possible first impression of Second Life.

London City thanks its community for being instrumental in making this Gateway a reality, and for being ambassadors in representing all the good things in Second Life.

Kev the Cockney sings Pub Landlord Style, LIVE on Saturday

KEV TYSON, a crazy Cockney  from London, has an amazing show filled with great songs and great fun.  Kev is a breath of fresh air in SL entertainment!

For some years, Kev Tyson, known as Kev the Cockney has performed in shows that the London City staff go out of their way to see each Christmas.

Kev has a pub style, around the piano voice and this has always been a hit with our team who adore him.

Finally we have been able to persuade Kev to appear live here in London City this Saturday.

Kevs Bio:
Kev the Cockney is a fun singer who covers all types of musical genres and loves the late 70s and 80s where he can always find a song you will like or something that brings back a few fond memories of that era.  Occasionally he throws a curve ball in which a style even he has not planned just happens. A set worth taking the time to listen to. You just never know for sure what he’s going to go with the hour and like he says he don’t even know himself so you lot ain’t got a chance. A Fun hour not to be missed !

Enjoy an evening of pub landlord style cabaret with us on Saturday.
Party starts 12pm SL (8pm UK),  Show starts 1pm SL

Voting Booth Results - Europe and Man on the Moon!

Thank you for taking part in the opinion polls in London City.  They are just for fun, but its fun to see which way the pendulum swings.

We held an In/Out referendum on Europe.  It was a close call throughout, but those wishing to stay IN had the majority.

103 people voted, 56% wanted to stay in, whilst 47% wanted to leave.

We last held this same poll in November 2014 when only 40% wanted to stay in and 60% wanted to leave (based on 100 votes).

For more information see:
Better Out: http://getbritainout.org/
Better In: http://www.strongerin.co.uk/

We also asked if man had ever been to the moon.

You will recall that the furthest man has ever been (except for the Apollo missions) is 250 miles in low earth orbit, a return journey of just 500 miles.   In 1969 man apparently flew 235,000 miles to the moon and back, a return trip of 470,000 miles.  He did this for last time in 1972 and have never strayed beyond the 250 mile low earth orbit since..  We asked if you believed that man on the moon had ever happened.

Overwhelmingly, you believe man went to the moon.  82 people voted.  71% believe, 21% do not believe and 8% are unsure.

Thanks for taking part.  Watch out for some US Primary polls coming soon!

New voting booth - Man on the moon?

A new voting panel is in the park asking "Has man really been to the moon?"

Before you vote, consider that it was at the height of the cold war and the Russians were making all of the significant steps in space, leaving the rest of the world behind.    The Soviet Union had launched the first orbiting satellite, animal, and first man into space. They had logged 5 times the amount of hours in space than anyone else.

High above the earth at 1,000 miles and extending to 25,000 miles lay lethal bands of radiation called the Van Allen radiation belt.  Every manned mission in history since the first in 1961 to the present has been well below this radiation field, except Apollo.  In order to survive the hour and half journey through this radiation field, solid lead shielding would be required. Instead a thin sheet of foil was used as the only protection.

The furthest man had ever been in space was 250 miles in low earth orbit and the moon is 235,000 miles away.  The international space station orbits the earth at 245 miles.

A pocket calculator has more computing power than computers in the 1960s

In modern times, we have never returned to the moon.

But if you believe we put a man on the moon, please vote yes.

Restart Problems on Tuesday

We are sorry for what seemed like continual restarts on all four of our regions at various times for most of yesterday.

As is normal on Tuesdays, the Second Life Servers were rolled for update, but unexpectedly also rolled all of the Release Candidate servers too, placing them on the main channel by accident.

A second roll was later performed to hopefully correct this error, but unfortunately it then placed the estate on the incorrect RC channel, After a third and final roll the estate finally went back to the correct server.

Each roll resulted in approximately 30 minutes of down time per region and effected not only our visitors ability to enter London City but also caused disruption to ongoing events.

We are sorry for this disruption, but it was beyond our control, and we are pleased to let you know that everything is now resolved.

London City Community Gateway

Second Life's London themed Community Gateway, "London City Gateway" is taking shape.

The Gateway aims to give new users the basic skills they need to enjoy their initial experience in Second Life.

New users creating accounts will be given the option to login directly to London City, so it is important to include as many useful tutorials as possible, without overwhelming a newcomer.

The 'Walk-Through' already covers how to move, walk, fly, communicate, dress avatars, use pose balls and join groups.

We are very fortunate that London City group memberships now total a quarter of a million residents and to that end we would like to draw upon your wealth of experience and invite your comments, suggestions and ideas for additional 'instructions' that should be included.

Please visit London City Community Gateway and imagine yourself as a brand new user. If you have a suggestion for something we should include as a basic but essential skill that a new user will need within the first hour of their Second Life, please drop a note card in-world to Billy Arentire.

At this point we are not seeking to demonstrate building skills as a part of the tour as this will be included in a dedicated area.

Thank you to all your suggestions so far.  Please keep them coming.
