April Fools free zone

We had a great April fools planned for this year, before the world went tits-up.   We had intended to land you on a region sized flat green grass in the sky via a forced landing point to make it look like London City had moved.

However, after talking it through with our team, we decided that any joke that involves deception at the moment is probably in poor taste.

So instead, we hope you enjoy firing yourself out of the cannon we have placed in the hub area in London City.   If you aim it correctly, you can fire your avatar over 2 regions distance!  Enjoy.

PS: We'll get you good and proper next year!

Covenant Update

The London City Covenant has been updated. The full covenant is displayed here .

For those already familiar with the covenant, the only change in this revision is the following information has been added since its last amendment in October 2019:

We are living in unsettled times, where the virtual community, more than ever, has come together for companionship during forced isolation from the real world.

We very much hope that you will find London City a great place to come and chat, chill-out and enjoy some pleasant company and conversations.

We do not wish to curtail anyone's enjoyment and we fully realise that there is a certain kind of 'gallows humour' that some people will adopt by way of a coping strategy.

However, we expect our patrons to act responsibly and thoughtfully as each one of us will inevitably need to adapt to a changing world and circumstances.

Whilst Coronavirus is in no way a taboo subject, we have decided that we will not host deliberately offensive residents or potentially distressing COVID-19 based avatars, or those wearing attachments that make people cough and claim to have infected them. We view this as "broadly offensive content or conduct" and will issue one warning only to remove the attachment. Those failing to comply will have their access to the estate revoked.

Let's keep London City in Second Life fun for everyone, at this time when we all need to use its resources, and look to each other to lift our spirits.

Today from 12pm SL (7pm UK) join us at Substation with Bailey and Coffee, and then Worlds End on the road with Katty at 2pm SL (9pm UK).

Joe Dolan on Saturday

Continuing the Irish Festival for St Patrick's, top entertainer Joe Dolan in Concert on Saturday.

Joe Dolan was an Irish entertainer and recording artist.

He is known mainly for his flamboyant shows which include many well know standards and for his high pitched singing voice, without using falsetto, which is reminiscent of Greek singer Demis Roussos.

Whilst Joe never achieved notable chart success in America, he regularly toured the States and played a residency in Vegas.  In Ireland he is the only Irish singer to have charted in the top ten in each decade from the 1960s onwards.

Joe Dolan died in 2007, but his talents live on and whilst you may not be familiar with the singer you will certainly know the songs and enjoy Joe's rendition.

On Saturday we invite you to enjoy this remarkable entertainer at Party in The Park.

Party starts at 1pm SL (8pm  UK) and the show is an hour later at 2pm SL.

Keeping Spirits High

A message to the Community from the London City Team:

We are seeing a lot of new users and returning users to London City, and we want to assure you that we have contingency plans to keep our events and services running smoothly throughout this crisis.

First and foremost, London City is a Community, and we hope that all our regular visitors will be sympathetic to those new and returning users who are feeling isolated and just want some company.

To this end, we ask that everyone remains mindful that some people will be feeling distressed and finding their opportunities to express themselves quite limited outside of Second Life, but that they are seeking comfort.

Our team and staff, remains committed to providing as much support as possible during these times.

As a community, we hope your involvement with London City will help bolster everyone's spirits and make our joint isolation a chance to better get to know and understand one another.

A Message From Lab CEO

Ebbe Altberg, CEO of Linden Lab writes today:

As concerns about the current coronavirus outbreak continue, we want to assure the community that  we have taken steps to ensure that the Second Life operations stay steady while also helping our employees stay safe through this public health crisis. Our hearts and thoughts go out to those who have been affected by this unprecedented event.

Second Life will continue to be available without interruption as we get through this tough time together. Due to our previous crisis contingency planning and the flexible nature of our distributed workforce, we are not expecting any changes to response times for support inquiries and payment processing.

We know that Second Life serves a great purpose for our community as people seek ways to stay in touch with their friends and co-workers, as they grapple with new social distancing protocols, mandated remote work requirements, and other precautionary measures.

With the closure of many universities and displaced conferences and events, Second Life also continues to be an option for disrupted organizations looking for new remote work, classroom or event solutions. To help, we recently implemented a reduction in pricing to a flat $99/month per region for qualified education and nonprofit organizations.

We are seeing an increase in new registrations and returning residents during this outbreak. Please be kind and welcoming to those who may just need a friendly conversation to escape from this crazy world for a moment or more. If you have a friend or colleague who is looking for a safe place to socialize online during these tough times, we encourage you to help them discover how Second Life can enable them to feel less isolated by connecting them to your favorite communities or experiences.

Like many companies across the globe, we’ve put into action new remote work policies for our employees to ensure that they can take care of themselves and their families while continuing to work from home. Prior to this incident, a large percentage of our company was already working from the “Moonlab” (that’s what we call remote employees’ locations), so we have been able to transition quickly and efficiently to a fully remote setup.

For the past 17 years, Second Life has been a special place that brings people across the world together -- and we appreciate your trust and support as we get through this rough time together.

Going Irish: The Nolans in Concert, on Saturday

Kicking off  the Irish Festival, it's The Nolans!

The Nolan's, who originally formed in 1974 as The Nolan Sisters, are an Irish/British girl group, famous for uptempo covers of well known songs.

In their own right, they are most famous for I'm In The Mood For Dancing, which when released in 1979, topped the charts around the world, and to this day, remains one of the most famous disco songs of the era.

The sisters, Anne, Denise, Maureen, Linda and Bernie, became regular favourites, appearing on many weekly prime-time shows, including The Two Ronnies.

Family feuds, ill health and the death of Bernie, put a stop to their act in the 2000's but the band reformed again in 2009, but stopped performing again by 2014.

Enjoy this show on Saturday at 12pm SL time (8pm UK), featuring all the Nolan's at the height of their popularity, with special guest, Kim Woodburn, who recently appeared quite demented along side Coleen Nolan on multiple shows!

Everly Brothers on Saturday

Appearing  this Saturday: The Everly Brothers.

Don and Phil Everly first became famous back in 1957 with Bye Bye Love and quickly established themselves as Rock n Rollers for the rest of that decade. Wake Up Little Susie, Cathy's Clown and Walk Right Back followed successively before they moved into the rock-a-ballad style they later became synonymous with.

In the mid 1960's they chart topped with, Crying In The Rain, Devoted To You, All I Have To Do Is Dream, Love Is Strange, Ebony Eyes, When Will I Be Loved and other softer rock songs.

By the start of the 1970's both brothers had become addicted to amphetamines which lead to a nervous breakdown for Don and the duo stopped recording. By the time both were recovered, disagreements had turned into a feud and the brothers did not perform, nor communicate with each other for a decade and pursued fruitless solo careers.

Thirteen years after the split, they performed some tense reunion concerts together beginning in the UK in 1983 where they had agreed that they would only talk to each other whilst on stage, but only if it was necessary.  Encouraged by the media hype of the reunion, in 1984 they recorded, On The Wings Of A Nightingale which was to be their final song to enter the charts.

By the 1990's the brothers had made peace with each other, but their stop-start careers had eroded their following and they continued to perform one-off reunion concerts every few years until their last appearance in 2004 as featured artists for the Simon & Garfunkel tour Old Friends, Live On Stage.

Phil Everly died in 2014, but the Everly Brothers legacy will live on.
We invite you to experience their heyday and bask in the incredible love songs penned by these talented and troubled souls.

Party in the Park is at 12pm SL (8pm UK) with the stage show an hour later.

Happy Valentine's Day

It is officially the most romantic day of the year and cupid will be fanning the flames of love and rekindling some dying embers as he goes around shooting arrows all over the place.

There are those people who think that Valentine's Day is an expensive rip-off for those in a relationship, forced to pay three times the going rate for flowers or an evening out.  And others who think it exploits loneliness in those who want to be in a relationship but are not..  And then there are people out there who look forward to showering their beau with lots of presents and candy.

Regardless of how you feel about the day itself, there are lots of people online in Second Life which means lots of chances to strike up new friendships, and what better place to do it than the Lala's Valentine's Ball today at 1pm SL (9pm UK).

Come enjoy some happy tunes and a finger buffet at the campest club on earth.  See you there, and Happy Valentines Day!

And don't forget to visit the Love Machine in the Hub and click it for your perfect date!   Look at the gorgeous hunk I got!

Matt Monro's Love-In for Valentines

On Saturday, join us for a special show to celebrate Valetines Day.

Matt Monro, sometimes known as the Singing Bus Driver, was a British male vocalist whose career spanned the late 1950s 60s and 70s.

In the 1960s Matt Monro hit international fame and left for America, spending the next 20 years performing concerts and in Las Vegas, before returning to the UK shortly before his death in 1985 at just 54.

The man with the warm and beautiful voice brought enormous pleasure to millions and had many celebrity fans including Frank Sinatra who said of Monro after his death: “If I had to choose three of the finest male vocalists in the singing business, Matt would be one of them. His pitch was right on the nose; his word enunciations letter perfect; his understanding of a song thorough.”

He sang the opening movie scores to The Italian Job (On Days Like These)From Russia With Love and Born Free and is best known for songs, Portrait of My Love, If I Never Sing Another Song, We're Gonna Change The World, The Impossible Dream and Walk Away (later recorded by Elvis).

Join us for a romantic evening, with Matt Monro appearing for the first time ever in London City.

Party starts at 12pm SL (8pm UK), and the Show begins an hour later at 1pm SL

It's packing quite a wallop

As I write this, rain is pouring down the window, like one of those 1940's movies, where you think the effects are over the top, but its true, walls of water are running down the brickwork.

Hurricane Ciara is currently in London (and throughout the UK) and is whistling 3 eerie notes constantly, at the same time.  Trash cans and bits of unsecured fence are tumbleweeding down the road and out of sight.

An old lady in a blue raincoat and plastic rain hat, has just sped past at about 30 miles an hour, with legs moving like a propeller.   I doubt she has managed speeds anything like this in the past forty years.

And now its getting dark and the wind is showing no signs of abating.  Aren't you glad you stayed indoors?  London City is definitely the place to be during this latest threat of Armageddon.

Keep Safe!

Substation today

We hope you enjoyed some romance with Sedaka  last night.
