Hippo goes belly up

Hippo Technology, the once great empire that comprised of hippoRENT, hippoVEND and even hippoVIEWER is no more.

From the dawn of Second Life, Andy Enfield built a robust rental system, but unlike similar systems on the market today, hippoRENT included a full and comprehensive accounting system, where a landlord could find out exact incomes for regions, properties or specific tenants.

In 2011 Andy needed to step away from Second Life, and his products were sold to B & M software.

The new owners did little to keep the product up-to-date and support was a very hit and miss affair. It was not unusual that a client would wait for up to a month for a reply, which was usually vague when it finally arrived.

The once great product withered on the vine and died as people migrated to systems that were not necessarily better, but offered support.

The final nail in the coffin went unreported on Valentines day this year, when the cloud servers collapsed leaving Hippo without a web presence and the once mighty hippo left the virtual world with a whimper that went unheard and unreported.

The company has posted a final bon voyage, with a non committal pledge to keep an eye on trends.

It is with a sense of nostalgia, that we bid a fond farewell to the once great Hippo!
