London City's tribute to Breaking Glass, with Hazel O'Connor, from the 1980's Punk/New Wave scene.

The hit film starring Hazel O'Connor and Phil Daniels, and broke the UK box office in 1981.

The film was called Breaking Glass and charted the success of a post-Punk/New Wave singer 'Kate' from humble beginnings, singing in rowdy back street bars, to sudden super stardom and her eventual meltdown.

Hazel O'Connor wrote and performed all of songs from the movie and just like her character in the film, experienced a brief superstardom in the early 80s with songs, Black Man, Eighth Day, If Only, Writing on the Wall, D-Days, Who Needs It and her most famous of all, Will You, which remained in the charts for 14 weeks.

In January 2022, Hazel suffered a life changing brain haemorrhage and remains on a very long and challenging road to recovery.

How to be a DJ in Second Life

'Spacial', the creators of SAM Broadcaster, a professional broadcasting suite for Internet Radio stations, has published some help pages on their website detailing how to set-up their software for use in Second Life.

The story has been posted to active internet DJ's, looking to grow their audience figures. 

As we know, Second Life has a massive party scene.  For DJ's bringing their talents to Second Life, it is highly likely that extra listeners will be acquired.

So if you have ever been interested in being a DJ, the following help pages may be just enough to encourage you to take the plunge (with a free trial).

It is worth mentioning that SAM comes in several flavours, the most popular ones being SAM-Cloud for a monthly or yearly fee, or SAM Broadcaster Pro, which you install on your computer and pay for just once, without recurring fees.

Both support Auto-DJ, which means, when you are not personally broadcasting, the software will automatically choose tracks to play to keep your station on-air, even inserting jingles, voice-overs, and promotions at set times or intervals.

SAM Broadcaster Cloud is an excellent way of streaming to Second Life as each SAM Broadcaster Cloud service includes a 24/7 auto-dj to keep the party going, even when you are sleeping.

With SAM Broadcaster Cloud, a Club Owner does not have to give any access to the Land settings within Second Life, the Club Owner simply adds the Direct link and any DJs associated with this SAM Broadcaster Cloud service will automatically be able to stream to any parcel of land configured with the station Listen link.

Weekend Gossip

Well here we all are. The morning after the night before and we lived through our hangovers. Congratulations!

Last night Karen Carpenter tried her best to get us all maudlin, but she hadn't figured on us being innoculated thanks to an hour of cheery tunes beforehand.

The weekend continues with events at 11am SL (7pm UK) with Substation retro and then Katty drunk as a lord mashing her records on the World's End beach at 1pm SL (9pm UK).

Hang in there

On Monday evening, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland announced a second National Lockdown for Great Britain.

With immediate effect, the 70 million people of Great Britain are quarantined with a "stay at home" order that will be reviewed again on February 15th, but widely expected to last until mid-March.  

Heralding this lockdown as 'One Final Push', is is hoped that at least 20 million of the most vulnerable people will receive the Oxford vaccine, developed in the UK and marketed by AstraZeneca UK, by the end of February.  

Life should slowly start returning to normal in the spring.

Since social mixing is now prohibited by law, this undoubtedly adds up to a lot of people feeling isolated, or bored, or anxious, or a combination of these things.

We hope to alleviate some of that in London City. Each day, thousands of people, pop in, or hang out and nearly all have a story to tell.  The greatest support network is user-to-user interaction, with the varying life perspectives that Residents bring with them and are willing to share with one another.

As always, our clubs and events begin every day around 12pm SL time (8pm UK) and we have a weekly outdoor concert and party on Saturdays and a double event running every Sunday from 11am SL time.  

So if you are feeling at a loose end, want some company, or just want to talk, come to London City. With your company, together, we will get through this once again.

Another Bank Holiday and another Party

It is London City's 9th Birthday Bash this weekend and its happening over the Bank Holiday.  This sounds like thirsty work!

Brits are crying out for another Holiday, it has been weeks since the last one, so most of the country is looking forward to a long weekend, with Monday as the Bank Holiday.

This is the final public holiday of the summer, with the next ones being Christmas Day and Boxing Day. 

This public holiday also marks a quick sell-off in the retail sector, to be rid of certain goods to free space up for the Halloween and Festive seasons.

There! I mentioned Christmas in August, forgive me!

So we can expect lashings of cheap grog and last minute sales from all the major supermarkets, with cheap sausages and burgers thrown in for the inevitable Bank Holiday Barbie.

As usual, as part of our public service, we've looked around for the best star deals on grog for this weekend as the boozy Brits sup their pints like there is no tomorrow.

 And they are.. Peroni, 12 bottles for £14 and Stella, 18 cans for £14, both from Sainsbury's.

Saint Patrick's Day Weekend

Well here it is!   The first Saint Patrick's Day weekend since 2012, with the 17th March occurring on the Saturday.

Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Grog, so we thought it only proper to look out for the best deals in the supermarkets.

Three great deals out there, including 8 cans from Tesco for £9, or 8 cans from Asda for £8.. or the best offer coming from Lidl's at 4 cans for £4.

With parties throughout the London City estate all weekend, there may well be a grog drought this weekend, so for heaven sake, get to the off-license in plenty of time!  That is the end of this public service announcement.

Margarita Pracatan at PRIDE in London City

Margarita Pracatan is a Cuban singer who found unexpected success in the 1990s.

Her big break came on the Clive James TV show where each week Margarita would play out the show, singing  her own unique rendition of a beautiful ballad performed on a Casio electronic organ, often with an unusually fast beat.

Now as part of London PRIDE she  performs a breathtaking show with an unusual orchestra.

A show not to be missed!

Here comes the Sun

It may only be Wednesday, but we can look forward to a wonderful 3 day weekend ahead.
The Sun has got its hat on and its certainly going to be wall to wall heat in the UK, hopefully a lot of sunshine too!

It's important to take on lots of fluids during this hot weather.  So, as part of our public service, we thought we'd look at the all important grog deals this weekend ahead...

Most Supermarkets have some good offers but by far the best this weeks is Tesco and Asda.  And if you can stomach the stuff, Tesco's offer of 18 cans of Carling for £10 is perhaps the best offer of the lot.

It has been almost a month since the last Bank Holiday, so this long weekend is overdue!

Join us in London City for the start of the Summer Season on Saturday, where we are going tropical with the legendary British Band from the 70s, BONEY M.
